Work on the first of two major intersection upgrades along High Street in Melton have started, helping improve traffic flow and safety in this rapidly growing suburb.
Crews will widen the intersection of High Street and Holland Drive to make it easier for heavy vehicles to turn left from High Street.
The works are part of the Allan Labor Government’s $17.08 million upgrade of High Street which includes major upgrades to Norton Drive and Coburns Road which are two of Melton’s busiest intersections.
The works at Holland Drive are required as part of the Norton Drive upgrade as heavy vehicles will have changed access to the nearby industrial estate following completion of works.
Works at the Holland Drive intersection are expected to be complete in early 2024 with limited disruption to the community.
There may be minor changes to traffic conditions in the area during construction. Drivers should allow an extra five minutes travel time during works.
Crews will install traffic lights at the Norton Drive intersection from early-mid 2024 to make it safer and easier to travel through the intersection and caters for the growing volume of pedestrians and motorists using the intersection.
The new intersection will feature signalised pedestrian crossings, traffic islands, upgraded street lighting, new asphalt and improved drainage.
Later in 2024, crews will commence works to remove the roundabout at High Street and Coburns Road and install traffic lights to make it safer and easier to get to local shops and travel through the intersection.
New pedestrian crossings will also be installed on all four approaches, providing a safer option for pedestrians to reach the Woodgrove Shopping Centre.
Up to 17,000 vehicles use High Street daily, and these upgrades will ensure the busy arterial is fit to cater for the growing volume of motorists in the region.
These vital works will be completed in stages to minimise impacts on the Melton community, with all works expected to be complete in 2025.
