NEW TAFE FOR MELTON TO SUPPORT CONSTRUCTION BOOM

A re-elected Andrews Labor Government will deliver a new TAFE for Melton giving jobseekers the skills they need for the job they want, closer to home.

Melton is one of the fastest-growing areas in the nation, with population expected to reach 332,051 by 2036.

It’s also one of the youngest regions in Australia, with 53 per cent of residents aged under 35. Young people in Melton and the western suburbs deserve opportunities to access high-quality training close to home.

There’s a lot going on in the west – Labor is building a new Melton Hospital, removing level crossings, upgrading stations, rail infrastructure and more.

We’re going to need a lot of construction workers to deliver these important projects.

And only Labor believes the projects we’re delivering for the west should be built by workers from the west.

That’s why a re-elected Andrews Labor Government will deliver a new TAFE campus at Melton with a focus on meeting demand for construction skills training.

This $45-$55 million investment will begin work on a new TAFE that will support hundreds of students once it’s complete.

It will fund land acquisition and construction, delivering a dedicated construction skills training facility to support around 600 students. Construction on the new Melton TAFE is expected to begin by 2024.

Labor understands our state needs a strong TAFE system so Victorians can get the skills they need for the job they want. Many industries are experiencing workforce shortages, so we’re making the important investments to create a pipeline of future workers.

You can’t trust the Liberals when it comes to TAFE – they brought the sector to its knees.

The former Liberal Government cut more than $1 billion from TAFE and closed 22 campuses, hurting suburban and regional communities.

We’ve worked hard every day we’ve been in government to rebuild and strengthen the TAFE system

We’ve invested more than $3.2 billion making sure TAFEs have the high-quality facilities they need. And we’ve removed financial barriers to study by introducing Free TAFE for more than 70 priority courses.

Because of those investments, more than 122,000 Victorians have started a Free TAFE course to get the skills they need for the job they want.

Only Labor is doing what matters – delivering a new TAFE for Melton and the western suburbs, ensuring we have the construction workers we’ll need for major projects into the future.
