Melton is now home to a new mega water tank, improving access to drinking water and providing reliable supply to the Melton region while catering to future growth in Victoria’s fastest growing region.

Member for Melton Steve McGhie today visited the site to open the mega water tank, which is designed to last 100 years, and is set to help secure the region’s water supplies.

The new tank will be able to hold 30 megalitres of water, which is almost double that of earlier tanks and the equivalent of 12 Olympic sized swimming pools.

Melbourne’s west is one of our fastest growing regions, and this $24 million project is one of many supporting the growth of the Melton region which is increasing its population by percent each year up to 2028.

The increased tank capacity, which is 11.5 metres high and 70 metres in diameter, will ensure we can continue to have safe and reliable water supplies for current and future generations. This will help to increase our resilience to changing populations and climate.

Designed with sustainability in mind, the tank’s elevated position lets water flow downhill naturally to supply water to the area. This makes it more cost effective and energy efficient, as it reduces carbon emissions and costs associated with the use of pump stations.

Greater Western Water is completing the project in partnership with Aquametro, with the final touches expected to be completed by early February 2025.
