COMMUNITY TO HAVE THEIR SAY ON NEW MELTON HOSPITAL

The Andrews Labor Government is getting on with delivering a new Melton Hospital, with local community engagement and early site preparation works underway.

Minister for Health Martin Foley is today calling on locals to have their say on the more than $900 million hospital which was fully funded as part of the Victorian Budget 2022/23.

Expressions of interest to join the new Melton Hospital Community Consultative Committee, Chaired by Member for Melton Steve McGhie, are now open and can be found on the Victorian Health Building Authority website.

The Committee will comprise of representatives from Western Health as the operator of the new hospital, Melton City Council, and a cross-section of the community to ensure local views and ideas are incorporated into the ongoing planning and design of this important facility.

The new Melton Hospital will be located within the future Cobblebank Metropolitan Activity Centre, close to the Cobblebank train station and Western Freeway.

Powered by 100 per cent renewable energy, the new hospital will include a 24-hour emergency department, more than 100 medical and surgical beds, an intensive care unit, maternity and neonatal services, more mental health services, radiology services and ambulatory care.

Once completed, Melton Hospital will have capacity to treat 130,000 patients each year and see almost 60,000 patients in the emergency department. The hospital will also provide a new education and training hub for doctors and nurses in Melbourne’s west.

Its operations are expected to generate 3,975 direct jobs on-site in its first full year of operations, including medical and nursing staff, allied health professionals, technicians and administrative and facilities management staff.

Early site preparation works have already kicked off with the extension of Bridge Road to the south of the site by Melton City Council and engagement with utility authorities to facilitate power, stormwater, gas and other utility infrastructure, that will service the new Melton Hospital site as well as the development of the broader precinct.

It will create more than 700 direct jobs and 1,700 indirect jobs during construction.

The new Melton hospital builds on other new hospitals being built in Melbourne’s west, with the new Footscray Hospital – which is the state’s largest ever health infrastructure investment in one site – set to open in 2025.
